Cleaning Your Walk-In Cooler

Regularly cleaning the walk-in cooler of your commercial business, whether that be a restaurant, supermarket, or convenience store, is a crucial part of operation. Regular cleaning can not only prevent mold and mildew, but it can also increase the lifespan of your unit. Just follow our suggested cleaning schedule to ensure that your walk-in cooler is squeaky clean.

Schedule

Just like your business has a cleaning schedule, so should your walk-in cooler. While some parts of your walk-in cooler will need to be cleaned frequently, others only need to be cleaned once or twice a year.

  • Daily: Regularly clean both the floors and shelves of your walk-in cooler.

  • Bi-annually: Twice a year, clean both the condensing and evaporator coils.
  • Annually: Once a year, carefully clean the drain lines and door gasket.

Cleaning

With your cleaning schedule finalized, it’s time to get started on cleaning your walk-in cooler. We recommend avoiding any harsh chemicals; they could react with and harm the surface of your walk-in cooler. Instead, stick to soap and water. Get rid of any hard water stains using a vinegar solution, and eliminate mold and mildew using a solution of bleach and water.

Condensing Coil

Throughout the year, dirt and dust can build up on the condensing coil. To clean the condensing coil, use an industrial vacuum to suck up any debris. Once it’s clear of all dust particles, wipe the coil down using a wet cloth.

Door Gaskets

Door gaskets are the bit of plastic that runs around the edge of your walk-in cooler’s door; they play a crucial role in ensuring that your walk-in cooler is properly sealed. To clean, use a soft cloth soaked in warm water and soap, and gently wipe down the gaskets.

Drain Lines

To clear out debris and mold, which can build up in the drain lines, we recommend working with a technician.

Evaporator Coil

To clear away built-up sediment from your evaporator coil, first remove the pan located underneath. Then, using an industrial vacuum, remove any larger pieces of debris. Finally, use a soft brush to remove any dust particles.
