How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts?

Clean air ducts keep your air conditioning system running smoothly and improve air quality. If no contaminants, pests or other concerns are present in your air ducts, the recommended frequency of cleaning is every three to five years. However, in some cases, it makes sense to get them cleaned more often or to get a more thorough cleaning. These are some of the most common situations that call for additional cleaning.

Moving into a New Home

Whether your new home was just built or previously owned, you should get the air ducts cleaned. New homes may have lingering drywall dust and construction debris. Previously owned houses may have contaminants caused by pets, smoking or dust. You should also get your ducts cleaned after doing a home renovation because construction of any kind spreads contaminants through the air.

Mold in the Air

Mold grows in humid, damp, hard-to-reach places like air ducts. If you see mold, smell mustiness in the air, or find yourself experiencing symptoms of mold exposure like itching or coughing, hire professions to sanitize the area, kill current growth and help prevent it in the future.

Pest Infestation

Whether pests have infested other areas of your home or you find them in the actual ducts, it’s important to clean the air ducts once you’ve eliminated the pest problem. Pests and pest control chemicals can contaminate the air, spreading odor and debris as well as disease.

Shedding Pets

Pet fur and dander tend to permeate the air. While pet owners don’t always notice this, their visitors do, especially if they have allergies. If you find yourself frequently vacuuming or sweeping up mounds of pet hair, chances are high that some of that hair is clogging up your air ducts.

Frequent Colds or Allergies

Dust mites, pet dander, dead skin cells and other allergens build up in air ducts. If you’re noticing that everyone in your home is getting colds or experiencing allergy symptoms, it might be time for an air duct cleaning. You may be able to see puffs of dust coming from air vents, but it’s just as likely that they won’t be visible to the naked eye.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may be able to get away with getting your air ducts every few years, or you may want to do so more frequently. Due to contaminants that can appear in air ducts, it’s safest to get them cleaned by a professional. All Temp is here to help with your Kissimmee air conditioning needs.
