What Temperature Should Your Refrigerator Be Set To?

Not only does the temperature of your refrigerator help keep your food fresh, but it can also affect the amount of energy being consumed! All Temp, the experts in Orlando refrigeration, can help you not only keep your refrigerator at the right temperature but lower its overall energy consumption!

Setting the Temperature

When refrigerators are set at the wrong temperature, you may be using unnecessary energy or find that your food spoils quickly. Generally speaking, refrigerators need to be set between 37 and 40 degrees F in order to work at peak efficiency. If your freezer is attached to your refrigerator, it should be set around five degrees. If you have a standard freezer, it’s temperature can be set to zero degrees. To double-check the temperature of your refrigerator, stick a thermometer in a glass of water and place it in the center of the unit. After 24 hours, you’ll have an accurate measurement of your refrigerator’s temperature.

Food Storage

The way you store your food has a direct impact on your refrigerator’s energy consumption. When you overfill your refrigerator, cold air is unable to circulate, and your refrigerator has to work harder to stay cool. Likewise, too little in your refrigerator means that there is more air that it has to cool, which can also drive up your refrigerator’s energy consumption.

Regular Maintenance

Not only will regular maintenance help to extend your refrigerator’s lifespan, but it can also reduce energy costs. Regularly check that the coils behind your refrigerator are free of dust, and defrost the freezer once a month to get rid of any frost build-up.

Your Refrigerator’s Placement

Strategically situating your refrigerator can help maximize its use. Try to make sure that there is plenty of airflow around both sides of the refrigerator. If the unit is between cabinets, be sure that nothing stored around the unit could negatively impact its airflow. Try to keep the refrigerator away from other appliances that could affect its temperature, including stoves and ovens. Ideally, your refrigerator will be placed in the coolest spot of your kitchen.
